Jong-koo Lee is currently the director of JW LEE Center for Global Medicine and also the director of Office of Policy Development of Healthy Society in Seoul National University College of Medicine. He is in charge of undergraduate and postgraduate student education and research for primary health care and public health policies on global health, and he also is in charge of epidemiology at Seoul National University Public Health School.

Before joining academia in 2011, he served as a government officer for 23 years being in charge of development of various programs and systems for primary health care and public health program renewal in Korea including the National Health Examination and Nutrition Survey, promotion of chronic disease R&D, and establishment of the Bio-Bank and National Medical Library.

From 2004 to 2007, he was the director-general of the Bureau of Health Promotion and Public Health Affairs. He made a main role in launching health promotion programs in Korea including increase in tobacco taxation, tobacco control programs, community programs on health promotion and disease prevention such as the national screening program, healthy cities initiative, capacity building programs of health promotion of community health centers and the National Cancer Prevention Plan. Before he was director-general of the health ministry, he was in charge of infectious disease control-quarantine services, immunization programs, surveillance of infectious diseases, and education of field epidemiology training program.

From 2007 to 2011, he was the director of Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. From 2011 to 2013, he was vice-president of Seoul National University Hospital. Recently, in 2015, he was co-head of the Republic of Korea-WHO Joint Mission on MERS-CoV and was designated as a special Prime Minister adviser for MERS.

He graduated Seoul National University College of Medicine in 1982 and finished his residency in Family Medicine at Seoul National University Hospital. He received his MPH degree (epidemiology) at Seoul National University School of Public Health in 1985 and his Ph.D. on Health Policy and Management at Seoul National University College of Medicine, Graduate School of Medicine in 2003.
